Long Way Home

[Vs] Swore I’d turn to salt if I turned around

Had the golden coast let in my sights

How many times have I hit the ground

Lost in the folds of weighted mind

[Vs] Your arms were ropes wrapped round my neck

You’d pass out grace like you think you’re God

I was choking on love it was a slow death

If I gave grace back it made me a fraud

[Vs] So I stole away while you slept well

Some bad habits are too hard to kill

Feeble bet you wouldn’t miss me long

How do I say sorry for the wrong I’ve done

[Vs] Got your first call when the sun came up

Didn’t have the heart to answer

Spit my sorrows in a coffee cup

Telling myself I’m no better than cancer

[Vs] Got your third call in Arkansas

No less than two days after

This whole escape has been a big free fall

So what would saying  sorry matter

[Vs] Watched two lovers in parking lot

You would’ve thought  they were the only two in San Luis

I put us in their place and my blood ran hot

I’m not made for this damn dry heat

[Vs] It’s a two days drive if I drive right through

Bearing my shame like the wiser fools do

If you’ve got grace anywhere left in you

Hold out a little while longer, please

[Vs] I bet you thought I was long past saving

Hell, I thought the same thing too

What I found in all of my leaving was

Love brought me the long way home to you
